The ‘new’ Corporations law

Howard's Law: What are the implicati

Howard's Law: What are the implicati

A panel of experts will speak on the implications of the High Court's decision on the Corporations Law at a public seminar in Sydney this evening.

Professor George Williams of the University of New South Wales, former NSW Attorney General Jeff Shaw QC and Dr John Buchanan of the Workplace Research Centre will explain and explore the Court's landmark majority decision.

"John Howard and Gough Whitlam have been the two great centralists in Australian history", said Professor Williams.

"The High Court has given legal recognition to a federal power that Australian governments will find hard to resist in the future."

"The WorkChoices case raises the question of whether there are any real limits left on the ability of the Commonwealth to regulate areas currently in State control."

"Education, health, town planning, local transport, energy and environmental protection are just some of the State fields that are now up for Commonwealth power grabs.

"In the wake of the decision, we need to ask what future governments might now do and what should be the role of the States in Australia."

The event is hosted by the Evatt Foundation and will be chaired by the Hon Ron Dyer, Evatt Vice-President.
