AWU National Conference

Date: 09 February 2007

More than 250 Australian Workers' Union delegates are to debate the key economic and environmental issues confronting Australia at the AWU's 2007 Biennial National Conference.

Key speakers at the five-day conference will include:

- South Australian Premier Mike Rann;
- Australian of Year Tim Flannery;
- Shadow Treasurer Wayne Swan;
- ACTU Secretary Greg Combet;
- Queensland Deputy Premier Anna Bligh, and
- AustralianSuper CEO Ian Silk.

AWU National Secretary Bill Shorten says, "Working families are under increasing pressure on many fronts. From the Howard Government's unfair work laws, its attacks on occupational health and safety standards and its failure to support Australian manufacturing.

"But they're also being hit by the water crisis that's biting in the city and the country. The AWU National Conference is about supporting working families and contributing to solutions to the key challenges facing Australia - water management, climate change, industry development and jobs growth."

The AWU Biennial National Conference begins on Sunday evening and concludes Thursday afternoon on the Gold Coast.
