Give Roy'l Comm money to Aged Care

Date: 27 July 2001

REDIRECT ROYAL COMMISSION MONIES TO AGED CARE

The money being spent on the Royal Commission into the construction industry could be much better spent on providing more aged care beds, the LHMU Aged Care Union said today.

" Aged Care in Australia is in a huge crisis.

" The estimated $ 50 million being spent on Judge Terry Cole's Royal Commission would create approximately 1,500 new aged care beds," LHMU Aged Care Union National President, Helen Creed, said today.

" The LHMU Aged Care Union National Executive meeting in Sydney today was horrified to hear of the reported $50 million estimated cost for this Royal Commission, which is no more than an anti-worker witch-hunt.

" The Minister for Aged Care, Bronwyn Bishop, would be doing all of us a favour if she stood up her PM and told him to stop being silly, cancel the inquiry and spend the money on our frail aged."

The LHMU Aged Care Union represents more than 6000 aged care workers.

" We know that our over-worked, under-paid members will see this Royal Commission as a waste of money, they would prefer this money be spent in a practical way to resolve the crisis in Aged Care."

The LHMU proudly represents more than 150,000 hard working women and men throughout Australia.
