Queensland’s LGA misled members:AWUDate: 21 August 2008
The leadership of the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) owes an apology to its members, and to the hard-working local government workforce, for consistently promoting the discredited WorkChoice laws to Queensland Councils, AWU Queensland Secretary, Bill Ludwig, said today. " The LGAQ beat its chest last year claiming the AWU in Queensland were mistaken, and advised Local Government leaders that they could choose to implement these hated Howard laws," Bill Ludwig said. " They played silly games of one upmanship about who had the best legal advice, and sought to tell Queenslanders the AWU were just plain dolts."
In a media release on this issue in March last year, the LGAQ were claiming in quite outrageous language that the AWU were creating: " The decision handed down on Wednesday by the Hon. Justice Spender in the Federal Court in Brisbane concerning the Etheridge Shire Council gives a lie to all this silly talk by the LGAQ," Bill Ludwig said. " The decision was about one Council, but the principles apply across the board, as the AWU has been saying since WorkChoices first arrived on the scene. " The credibility of the LGAQ leadership must now be called into question. " In accordance with their responsible position in the Queensland community, they now need to issue an apology to their workforce and to their members . " They should now tell everyone concerned that their advice to their members and to local government employees was wrong, and that their claims about Workchoices and the AWU's position were incorrect and based on a conservative political agenda. " Despite their claims to the contrary at the time, they were not playing it straight with the Queensland community," Bill Ludwig said.
