Geelong workers to rally for jobsDate: 08 August 2001
Members of the Australian Services Union (ASU) employed at the threatened Target Head Office in Geelong, together with the support of other Geelong workers are to rally at the launch of the upmarket Geelong Waterfront Sheraton Hotel by the Premier Steve Bracks (Steve Bracks is in town as part of a special Community Cabinet Meeting). The Premier is to open the new multi-million dollar Geelong hotel on the recently redeveloped Waterfront, whilst at the same time the 850 Target Head Office staff face job cuts and threatened closure from the parent company Coles Myer's reorganisation. The rally has the support of both the Geelong Trades Hall and the Victorian Trades Hall Council. Unions including the Australian Education Union, the Textile Workers' Union, the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union, the Liquor Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers' Union and the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union have all pledged to support the rally to save the largest service sector employer in Geelong from relocating to Melbourne. The rally will - to coincide with the official opening of the hotel - will see the Premier accept a community petition of over 12,000 signatures from the Target Workers calling on Coles Myer to retain it's Target headquarters in Geelong. The rally will hear from Target workers, from Geelong community leaders, and will call upon the Premier to stand up to Coles Myer and to protect these important jobs. Date: Thursday 9th August 2001, 12 noon (gathering from 11.30) Place: Sheraton Hotel, Eastern Beach Road, Geelong (Geelong Waterfront)
