Labor welcomes settlement at TriStarDate: 08 August 2001
Labor Shadow Minister for Industrial Relations, Arch Bevis, today welcomed the agreement reached between the AMWU and the management of TriStar that has secured workers' entitlements and enabled a return to work for TriStar and the vehicle industry. "The Labor Party welcomes the compromise and is pleased that an agreement could be reached. We are particularly pleased that the workers at TriStar have been successful in securing their legally accrued entitlements. "Looking back on the last week it is clear that the government has acted in a spoiling role and tried its best to disrupt the ongoing negotiations. Just last weekend Tony Abbott weighed into the dispute arguing that the company should make no concessions at all - that it should not attempt to compromise and reach agreement. Tony Abbott effectively argued there should be no negotiations. "Quite clearly if the company had taken Tony Abbott's advice, this dispute would still be unresolved and the workers' entitlements would remain unprotected. "At no point has Tony Abbott or this government behaved as honest brokers. "Australian workers and companies deserve a fairer, more balanced system which encourages and assists them to reach mutually agreed positions. Clearly this Minister and this government are not able to provide the leadership or the system to achieve this", said Mr Bevis.
