MUA honours fallen comradesDate: 07 January 2009
MUA member Trevor Moore, 43, was killed tragically on board the Karratha Spirit on Christmas Eve. He is the second seafarer killed in a matter of weeks in work related incidents aboard Australian crewed vessels, the first mortalities in a seagoing job accident in 25 years. Union representatives, crewmates and family will pay tribute to the former chief IR at his funeral at THE PALMDALE CREMATORIUM on the Central Coast in the HILLSIDE CHAPLE on Thursday, January 8, at 1:30pm. Trevor recently helped lead the battle on board the Seakap in Newcastle to ensure US based Koppers would eventually replace the vessel with another Australian crewed ship on the coast. The Seakap story features in the current edition of the Maritime Workers' Journal which is being distributed this week. The father of two died of massive head injuries on board the Karratha Spirit 60 nautical miles off Karratha when struck by a mooring line during the operation to disconnect from the riser . At the time the vessel was being evacuated due to the approaching cyclone. The fatality is subject to a coronial inquiry, with the union intending to make a detailed submission. Sydney Assistant Branch Secretary Paul Garrett attended the vessel immediately notice of the accident was received and has made a full report in consultation with the CIR and crew to the union. Gary Keane Southern NSW Branch Secretary has been working with the Sydney and West Australian Branches and the National Secretary and National Officers to provide assistance and support for the crew involved and Trevor's family since the accident. Meanwhile the union has written to the Minister for Transport and the Minister for Resources and Energy)over our safety concerns in the industry, with the National Secretary reinforcing the union's assertion of conflicts in safety jurisdiction and procedures in the Offshore and Hydrocarbon industry between NOPSA and AMSA. He has asked for an urgent review of existing arrangements. .
