Don't Bother Coming Into Work Today

Date: 21 August 2001

Tomorrow key recommendations from the report "Don't Bother Coming into Work Today - Casual Work, Casual Nature" will be announced.

Compiled by the Young Christian Workers Smart Casual Association the report examines the situation of young casual workers across Australia.

QCU General Secretary Grace Grace said high casualisation of young workers is a major issue for Queensland unions.

"One in three people in Australia are casual workers and nearly one in two young people are employed casually, twice that of the rest of the labour force," Ms Grace said.

"This is a very serious situation and this report highlights that young people clearly lack knowledge of their rights and entitlements as workers," she said.

"Queensland unions are striving to ensure that all workers have a voice at work and that all workers have the opportunity to access permanent full time and part-time work," she said.

"This year the QCU were successful in gaining an increase in the award casual loading up from 19 per cent to 23 per cent by the 4 April 2002 to compensate casual workers for their relative disadvantage compared with permanent employees," Ms Grace said.

"The QCU with Queensland unions will continue to fight for and represent all workers especially casual workers," she said.

"This is not only an issue for unions but for the Queensland and Federal governments as well as the community,": Ms Grace said.
