Urgent Changes Needed to Labour HireDate: 28 August 2001
Awards and Agreements, legislation and unfair contract provisions will be used to pursue urgent changes needed for Labour Hire workers in Queensland. Queensland Council of Unions General Secretary Grace Grace told the August Executive meeting today that the Labour Hire industry in Queensland is growing so dramatically that urgent changes need to be made for labour hire workers to achieve workplace entitlements and job security. At the union summit last week, Dr Cameron Allen from Griffith University reported that one in three workers were now employed casually. Ten years ago only one in ten workers were casually employed. "The Queensland workforce is changing quickly and unions have to address these changes," Ms Grace said. "The QCU with Queensland unions are developing a strategic campaign to ensure that labour hire companies were regulated, and that labour hire workers received fair wages and entitlements," Ms Grace said. "The concept of the labour hire company in Australia is changing Australian society and our local communities," Ms Grace said. "Most importantly we will be undertaking an education campaign about our changing workforce to our current union members, the general community and looking for opportunities for labour hire workers to join unions," Ms Grace said. "Every worker is entitled to union protection," she said. "Ultimately we want all Queenslanders to access their rights and entitlements as workers and more importantly have the opportunity to access full time employment," Ms Grace said.
