PSA General Secretary to retireDate: 11 April 2000
Janet Good, General Secretary of the Public Service Association will finish work at Easter. She will be on holidays until July 3 when she will officially retire. Maurie O'Sullivan will be Acting General Secretary until July. Once Janet's resignation is official Central Council will elect a successor. It is expected Maurie will win this election. This will be for the balance of Janet's term. Janet has been General Secretary since 1993. Prior to that she had two terms as PSA President (1987-89 and 1991-93). She was Chair of Women's Council 1984-87 and has held many other positions since first becoming a delegate in 1975. Janet is the PSA's first female President and first President elected by the members - previously Presidents had been elected by Annual Conference delegates. She was the union's our second elected General Secretary - prior to elections which began in 1989, General Secretaries were permanent appointments. She was our second female General Secretary. While Maurie is Acting General Secretary, Senior Vice-President Sue Walsh will be Acting President. And should Maurie be successful in July, Sue is expected to be elected President. There will be elections late this year for all Central Council and Executive positions. MESSAGES of farewell, good wishes, etc, can be sent to Janet at jgood@psa.asn.au
