Staff rally to Keep Ansett FlyingDate: 10 September 2001
More than 1,000 Ansett employees, their friends, supporters and families rallied today to call upon the Federal Government to take immediate steps to help save the financially troubled airline. Ansett employs 16,000 Australians, with a further 35,000 workers in related industries facing uncertain futures if the airline fails. ASU delegate for Ansett, Steve Smith, expressed the hope of all staff when he said "We will come through even this - a stronger and better airline". The crowd also heard from ASU Assistant National Secretary Linda White, the ACTU's Greg Combet, Dave Oliver from the AMWU and Bill Shorten from the AWU. Petitions and postcards, calling on John Howard to intervene in Australia's most serious aviation crisis, were distributed throughout the crowd. You can also send the PM an email by visiting our special campaign web page: http://www.keepansettflying.org or download the petition and start collecting signatures at: http://www.asu.asn.au/airlines/apetition.html
