Community support for Ansett staffDate: 13 September 2001
The campaign to save Ansett jobs will take to the Queen Street Mall today, according to the Australian Services Union. ASU Branch Secretary Julie Bignell said Ansett workers were holding an information stall and distributing flyers to promote tomorrow's community rally in Brisbane. "We've had an excellent response from the community who've really thrown their support behind these workers," Ms Bignell said. "The community support has been great, and sits in stark contrast with John Howard and John Anderson, who have sat on the sidelines as this crisis has unfolded," she said. "Nearly two years ago the federal government allowed the sale of Ansett despite warnings at the time that Air New Zealand lacked sufficient capital," she said. "Mr Howard promised no jobs would be lost as a result of the sale, but now Ansett is on the brink of collapse because the government failed to seek any real commitments from Air New Zealand," she said. "The government cannot sit on their hands when thousands of jobs are at risk because of a situation they helped create," she said.
