Ansett workers rally everyday

Date: 17 September 2001

Brisbane Ansett workers will rally everyday until entitlements secured

Ansett workers will again hold a peaceful rally at the Ansett Terminal at Brisbane Airport at 3pm today.

Queensland Council of Unions General Secretary Grace Grace said Ansett workers will hold a rally every day until their accrued entitlements are secured.

"Ansett workers need to be back at work with Ansett Airlines flying again for job security for all workers in the tourism industry to return," Ms Grace said.

"A crucial part of the future for Ansett workers is knowing they have their jobs back and their entitlements are secured," she said.

"Solutions by the Howard government so far have been seen by the workers to be hollow rhetoric," Ms Grace said.

"Howard and Anderson have failed the Australian public and the Ansett workers by not having any plan to get Ansett flying again," she said.

"More importantly the Federal government has failed to produce any comprehensive plan to ensure the future security of the airline and tourism industries in Australia," she said.

"Workers in these vital industries deserve better from this government," Ms Grace said.

"The social and economic impact on Queensland because of the collapse of Ansett is going to be staggering, thanks to the incompetence of the Federal government," she said.

"The QCU also calls upon banks, credit unions and other credit providers to be lenient on workers and come to some arrangement to delay payments until they are back at work," Ms Grace said.
