Ansett returns to our skiesDate: 01 October 2001
Hundreds of Ansett workers gathered at Melbourne Airport Saturday to mark the first Ansett flight in nearly 2 weeks. The first flight of the reborn airline left Melbourne at 9am headed for Sydney. Ansett employees greeted each passenger who checked in, presenting them with "I helped get Ansett Australia back in our skies" teeshirts. Following the departure, staff headed to the Golden Wings lounge (their headquarters throughout the campaign to save Ansett) for a celebration. ACTU Secretary Greg Combet and President Sharran Burrow addressed the crown as did the ASU's Martin Foley and Administrators Mark Mentha and Mark Corda from Andersens. Celebrations continued a short time later as the first arrival into Melbourne airport touched down a little after 10am. Hundreds of Ansett workers again packed the arrivals lounge where a festival atmosphere - complete with bands, clowns and balloons prevailed.
