National Aged Care Phone-inDate: 19 October 2001
Tomorrow, October 20, NSW people are being urged to share their experiences of aged care The people of New South Wales will have an opportunity to describe their experiences of the current aged care system during a national phone-in being run this Saturday, October 20, by the New South Wales Nurses Association (NSWNA) and Australian Nursing Federation. National Aged Care Phone-in Nurses and members of the general public are invited to call in with their experiences so a fuller picture of the aged care system can be obtained. All personal information will be treated confidentially. NSWNA General Secretary, Sandra Moait, said the NSWNA recently surveyed a large group of nurses and found that their confidence in the Federal Government's handling of aged care policy has been shaken and there are high levels of discontent amongst nurses in the sector. "They were unhappy with Federal Government funding levels, staffing levels and skill mix, the low level of support provided to aged care nurses and poor occupational health and safety practices in aged care facilities. "Tomorrow's phone-in will build on this survey and is designed to include input from residents and the relatives and friends of residents. "I encourage anyone who has had experience with the aged care system to call us tomorrow. By helping us get a better picture of the aged care system callers will be helping our efforts to improve the quality of aged care," Ms Moait said.
