Sacking Survivors Suffer TooDate: 17 April 2000
A five year observation study revealed that those who survive mass retrenchments suffer as much as or more than those whom didn't. Staff remaining after downsizing were reported to have increased smoking rates, damaged home lives, poor productivity levels and were burn out. Loss of job control, job insecurity, and a strong need to prove their value by working excessively overtime were other detectable symptoms.
