MUA sponsors Surfing ChampionshipsDate: 19 October 2001
GOLDEN BREED/ MARITIME UNION OF AUSTRALIA (MUA) Picturesque Caves House will host the opening ceremony of the Golden Breed/MUA National Long board championships at Yallingup tomorrow evening. Competitors from all over the nation will be formally welcomed to the event by officials from Surfing Western Australia and the local community. Major sponsors for the event include Golden Breed and the Maritime Workers Union both of which are well behind the re-emergence and popularity that long boarding has seen in the last few years. Clothing manufacturer Golden Breed has been on people's shirt pockets since 1969. Who could forget their first Golden Breed "silky" they ever bought back in the early 70's. The famous brightly colored, light weight Hawaiian shirt graced many a grommet's father's back and has now emerged to become a leading long boarder's fashion label. The MUA is also a major sponsor of the National Titles which are being held under the banner Safer Ships, Cleaner Seas as part of its ongoing campaign against the deregulation of our coast and the dangers of substandard foreign shipping to our marine environment. At a previous event sponsored by the MUA, current Australian Long board Champion Wayne Deane said "It's great to see the union backing this event". "One of the reasons I'm here is because I'm an environmentalist. It's shocking the way they let some of these foreign ships run down. You know they are going to go down at any time. It's almost as if you have to shock people into realizing what's happening", he added. Competition starts at 7am Sunday at Yallingup beach and as an added incentive the winner of the 9 foot division will be joining the Australian Bombora team to represent Australia at the World ISA Titles in South Africa next year. More than contestable waves are expected for the first 4 days of the event and with Yallingup's renowned long peeling left-hand breaking walls awaiting competitors the surfing will not only be fantastic, but the quality of the waves will be a welcome site to the competitors.
