LHMU National Council meets Darwin

Date: 26 October 2001

MEDIA ALERT

Place: Carlton Hotel
Dates:October 28 - November 1
Contact person: Lisa Caukill 08 8980 0872 or 040 346 1782
The 150,000 member Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union will hold its National Council meeting in Darwin from October 28 to November 1 at the Carlton Hotel.

The LHMU represents a wide variety of workers in the Health, Aged Care, Child Care, Hospitality, Casino, Cleaning, Security, Catering, Beverage and Paint industries.

The union - which has a majority of female members and represents a large number of NESB workers - has a strong reputation for standing up for progressive values and fighting to improve the condition of low-waged workers.

The union's NT branch has played an important part in the struggle of indigenous workers wanting decent pay and respect from their employers.

In the NT the union's approximately 3000 members are well represented in the accommodation industry, property services, correction services, fire service, hospitals and other health services.

The union, which was founded nearly 100 years ago, is now lead by Jeff Lawrence, the National Secretary, and Helen Creed, the National President.

The key issues to be discussed by the National Council delegates are:

Monday Oct 29 - union organising;
Tuesday Oct 30 - aged care, workers' entitlements, industrial legislation, paid maternity leave;
Wednesday Oct 31 - the union's social justice agenda;
Thursday Nov 1 - passive smoking in the hospitality industry; airport security.
