Orange a real lemonDate: 30 October 2001
The Australian Services Union (ASU) today condemned the Telco Orange for sacking hundreds of employees in it's call centres around Australia without notice and in failing to abide by it's legal obligations to consult employees and their trade unions. ASU Victorian President Martin Foley said today: "Orange has turned into a real lemon for hundreds of it's employees today. We are seeing call centres around the nation being devastated by job losses. And Orange just sit back and ignore their obligations to consult with employees and their unions about job protection measures." The ASU condemned the Federal Government for creating the climate that allows multinational employers like Orange to walk away from their responsibilities to their workers. "This Federal Government has the blood of hundreds of job losses on it's hands as it encourages employers to avoid their rights and responsibilities to deal fairly with staff. These hundreds of job losses will contribute to the political tombstone of the Howard Government as workers everywhere see employment security and protection of employee entitlements disappear at a rate faster than the Dodo." The ASU have filed an urgent order in the Australian Industrial Relations Commission seeking orders to halt the sackings whilst Orange carries out it's legal obligations to consult with trade unions.
