Labor Seeks Copy of Digital TV LegnDate: 19 April 2000
Shadow Minister for Communications, Stephen Smith, today said that he had formally requested that the Government provide the Opposition with a copy of its digital television legislation. "The legislation was not introduced into the Parliament last week. The next possible date for introduction of the legislation is May 9th," Mr Smith said. "Passage of the legislation by June 29th is essential in order to provide industry certainty. "Given the failure of the Government to introduce legislation last week, doubts have now been raised by industry about the ability of the Parliament to meet that deadline. "I have requested that the Minister for Communications, Senator Alston, urgently provide me with a copy of the Government's legislation in advance of 9th May on a confidential basis, to allow Labor to begin its detailed consideration of the Government's proposals, thereby minimising the potential for delay. "I look forward to receiving the legislation from the Minister urgently," Mr Smith said.
