Death in the afternoonDate: 21 December 2001
News Ltd closes afternoon editions in Sydney and Melbourne News Ltd has killed off Australia's last two afternoon newspapers. The Daily Telegraph will produce its final afternoon edition on Friday 25 January 2002, while Melbourne's Herald-Sun ends today. The company commits to no job losses from the changes, however there will be significant roster changes in Sydney, and the rostered hours for casuals will be reduced in Melbourne. The company has indicated they will work with individuals to accommodate their personal needs. The Alliance will meet with the company early in the new year to discuss the changes. The Alliance will seek: Income maintenance for those members affected by the loss of shift penalties. Conversion to permanent part-time for casuals who request it. Flexibility in new roster arrangements, following real consultation with staff. We will convene meetings with members in the new year. Individual concerns can be forwarded to the Alliance offices: Sydney, Richard Harris 02 9333 0999; Melbourne, Pat O'Donnell 03 9691 7100
