Workers Online finishes 2nd

Date: 22 January 2002

Workers Online

Workers Online

Workers Online finished a highly credible 2nd out of nearly 200 nominations in Labourstart's international union website of the year contest for 2001.

Thanks for your support

Thanks to all those that voted for Workers Online in Labourstart's international Labour Website of the Year Awards. Out of nearly 200 nominees Workers Online outpolled all but one finishing a credible second. Labourstart is the most popular labour movement site in the world. Here is their editor, Eric Lee's review:

In 2nd place is an Australian website that should be familiar to many of our readers -- Workers Online. A contender in previous website of the year competitions, this site is unique in the world. Set up by the Labour Council of New South Wales, edited by Peter Lewis, Workers Online is a weekly web-based newspaper filled with news, views and gossip about the trade union movement, and not only in this corner of Australia. It is essential reading for thousands of trade unionists every week, which is not something you can say about your average trade union website, unfortunately. With 457 votes, it would easily have won the award in any previous year's competition (keeping in mind that a year ago, in our best effort to date, only 300 votes were cast and the winning site won with about 50 votes). But this year, that just wasn't enough. Sourced from: http://www.labourstart.org/lwsoty/

LaborNET's New Face

We've redeveloped the interface of LaborNET, giving it a more contemporary and cleaner look. By adopting a minimalist approach towards the use of graphics the site loads much faster. We've also developed a new page that showcases all 18 of the union sites on LaborNET at: http://labor.net.au/unions_labornet/

Coming up...

  • Over the next month we'll be redeveloping the design and layout of Workers Online
  • Workers Online will return on 15 Feb 2001
  • In mid April we'll be launching an online Union Directory on LaborNET using best practice technology that will enable other labour-related sites to share this content. This will allow all labour movement activists to easily track down people and organisations of interest online.
