Day of Mourning for Workplace DeathsDate: 28 April 2000
Workers around the world will remember colleagues who have been killed or seriously injured at work on Friday, April 28. The NSW Labor Council is organizing events in workplaces around the state, with workers on building sites, transport yards, factories, the casino and parliament House taking time to pay their respects. Sydney commuters will be offered lilies, signifying the dead, as a reminder of the cost of building the office blocks they work in. In Sydney workers will attend a special prayer service in Cook and Phillip Park outside St Mary's Cathedral at 9.30am. The memorial service will be addressed by: * NSW Minister for Industrial Relations Jeff Shaw * Injured Worker and Paralympian Heath Francis * Rev Ian Lawton - who will offer a special prayer written for the day * Father Doherty who will offer a blessing NSW Labor Council secretary Michael Costa will preside over the proceedings. Pic Eds: Building workers will hang a giant banner from St Mary's Cathedral to draw attention to the day.
