Coal Stats: Jobs Dive, Profits Soar

Official staistics show that the Australian coal industry has enjoyed staggering profit levels while continuing to shed workers.

According to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures, coal industry profits for 1998-99 rose 58 per cent to $1,990 million.

At the same time, 2,777 workers - or 12 per cent of the total industry - were retrenched, along with an 11 per cent slide in wages and salaries.
