Ansett sale: Court says "Just Do It"Date: 12 February 2002
Time to pull the finger out and complete the Ansett sale to Fox-Lew bid.The Australian Services Union (ASU) today said the decision of the Federal Court of Australia in refusing the Ansett Administrators request for an order regarding the circumstances of continuing trading at a loss meant it was now time to do whatever it takes to finalise the sale to the Fox-Lew Syndicate.
"Today's decision means that we must now finalise the sale of the airline to the Fox-Lew Syndicate. Everyone involved - airports, governments, administrators and anyone else with their finger in the pie - need to do whatever it takes to finalise the sale." Mr Foley said: "Fox-Lew's Tesna syndicate have the money; they have the planes; they have the staff. It is in the interests of those thousands of workers and their families who are either hanging on for work or awaiting the finalisation of their entitlements payments for the sale to happen now." "We are reassured by the statment Mr Fox and Mr Lew have made upon their return to Australia from securing aircraft and beginning the process of Tesna taking over Virgin. We now know that there is a long term plan in place to secure these jobs and deliver a viable future for competition in the airline industry. What today's decision says is that everyone must now pull out all stops to finalise the deal." Mr Foley said: "The interests of all creditors are best served by completing the deal. We remain confident that it will happen - but it must happen as soon as possible."
