HOW THE WEST WILL BE WON

Date: 15 March 2002

Labor frontbencher Mark Latham will debate the changing nature of suburban Australia with planning specialist Brendan Gleeson on Monday morning at Sydney's Southern Cross Hotel.

Debate over suburban Australia has erupted in the wake of the last federal election.

Following the Coalition's victory, many commentators claimed that Labor has lost touch with its erstwhile heartlands and their so-called 'aspirational voters'.

Mr Latham will talk on the changing face of Sydney's politics, federal responsibility for our cities and new Labor directions for housing and urban policy.

Dr Gleeson will analyse the patterns of change, and discuss how governments are dividing the suburbs and what can be done to prevent further segregation.

Sydney University economist, Professor Frank Stilwell, will chair the discussion.

The debate will take place in the Mayfair Room of the Southern Cross Hotel, on the corner of Elizabeth and Goulburn Streets.

Breakfast will be available from 7.30 am, the seminar will commence at 8.00 am, and the discussion will conclude on the dot of 9.00 am.

The debate will be the first of the Evatt Foundation's Breakfast Seminars for 2002.
