Young workers underpaidDate: 10 April 2002
Today, the Queensland Council of Unions' free "at work" advice service was flooded with young people inquiring about underpayment of wages. QCU Assistant Secretary Chris Barrett said the hotline was a key indication that young people have serious concerns about their working conditions. "Over 150 young people contacted the service today," Mr Barrett said. "The major issues raised related to underpayment of wages and failure to provide Award conditions," Mr Barrett said. "Other issues raised included workplace bullying, inadequate training, failure to provide breaks and a general unawareness of rights and entitlements," he said. The QCU is considering expanding its services for young workers in Queensland as a result of the hotline. The hotline was established as part of QCU's commitment to Youth Week 2002 and will continue tomorrow from 8am to 4pm on 3846 6855. Young people should contact the hotline number on 3846 6855 or visit www.qcu.asn.au/atwork.html
