Country university offers lessDate: 10 May 2000
General staff at Charles Sturt University have been offered a pay rise which is less than that offered to general staff in the big city universities. The offer reflects the Howard Government's squeeze on universities, which is badly hurting the country universities. Despite the country emphasis in the budget, nothing has been done to ease their plight General staff have been offered 8% over three years and have been asked to accept substantially reduced working conditions. (City universities have offered around 12% over three years, the best outcome being 14%.) Meetings of general staff on the three major campuses -- Albury, Bathurst and Wagga Wagga -- have unanimously directed their Union , the Community & Public Sector Union (CPSU), to continue to negotiate vigorously on their behalf to improve the University's current offer. To highlight the deficiencies in the University's offer, general staff will be conducting an information blitz at the entrances to the University's three major campuses over the next week. The Albury-Thurgoona campus started on Wednesday 10 May 8am-9am. The Wagga Wagga blitz is on Thursday 11 & Friday 12 May from 7:30 to 9:00 am. Bathurst campus will hold their Blitz on Monday 15 & Tuesday 16 May, 7.30am-9am each day. Volunteers from general staff will be handing out leaflets outlining the contentious issues in the University offer including a working week spread over seven days, a 10 hour working day before overtime and a salary increase of only 8%, 4% lower than that offered to the academic staff.
