Qld casuals weekend work rip offDate: 10 May 2002
Queensland casual workers could have been underpaid because of incorrect advice given by wages advisory service, Wageline. Queensland Council of Unions Assistant General Secretary Chris Barrett said the QCU received complaints from casual workers that Wageline provided information saying the casual loading increase did not apply for work on weekends. Today, a Queensland Industrial Relations Commission Full Bench declared that the casual loading increase does apply to all state Awards including work on weekends. "Casual workers already miss out on job security, financial stability, public holidays, annual leave, sick leave, family leave, bereavement leave, severance pay, training and career progression. They should not miss out on their casual loading for working weekends," Mr Barrett said. "We are concerned that casual workers have been underpaid," he said. "We would like all casual workers to contact their union to ensure that they receive accurate information and the correct pay," he said. "Anyone that has been underpaid could be entitled to back pay," Mr Barrett said. "All employers who have also received advice from Wageline regarding casual workers not receiving casual loading on weekends should also make sure they are paying their casual workers correctly," he said. The QCU won the case to increase casual loading in Queensland to 23% last year.
