A national disgrace!

Date: 31 May 2002

Serbian national Rados Stevanovic was sponsored to Australia to work, painting orthodox murals for the Serbian Orthodox Church in Blacktown. His employer committed in writing to the Department of Immigration that he would pay Rados $35,000 per year, cover him for Workers Compensation, comply with Australian law, etc.

None of this happened. Instead Rados was paid $50 per week and kept in a shed on site, to sleep every night amongst the paint thinners. For four and a half years the Department of Immigration did no checking that the sponsorship conditions were being complied with. Rados complained to the Department in January that he was being exploited. They have still done nothing!

Now the CFMEU is campaigning for Rados.
