QCU condemns Qld government: EB

Date: 26 June 2002

Today the Queensland Council of Unions (QCU) Executive meeting passed resolutions condemning the Queensland government for its position and general attitude in relation to public sector bargaining.

The Executive received reports from public sector affiliates and expressed concern that some negotiations were being held through the media, rather than at the negotiating table.

QCU General Secretary Grace Grace said it was incumbent on the government to negotiate with public sector unions and their members at the negotiating table.

"The QCU Executive also expressed concern that government was failing to address their own workers' needs that had been raised through the bargaining process," Ms Grace said.

In relation to Q-Build negotiations, Executive unanimously condemned the government for reneging on previous agreements made with Q-Build unions and their workers.

"The QCU Executive calls on the Premier to directly intervene in the enterprise bargaining process in the public sector," Ms Grace said.

"His leadership is needed to resolve these issues in public sector negotiations as a matter of urgency," she said.

The QCU will be seeking urgent meetings with the Premier and Senior Ministers to discuss the current state of enterprise bargaining with government.

QCU Executive congratulated the public sector unions on their campaign so far and noted the apparent public support for the nurses, in particular and public sector workers generally.

"Public sector unions and their members have vowed to continue to take action until these matters are resolved," Ms Grace said.
