Pathology workers stop work Qld wide

Date: 10 July 2002

Queensland Pathology workers stop work, Nambour Hospital stops work and the Queensland government should return to the negotiating table.

Tomorrow (July 11) pathology workers across Queensland will stop work from 3.00pm angry at Queensland Health intentions to centralise pathology services in Brisbane, threatening the services provided at regional health centres such as Nambour.

Nambour Hospital health workers also stop work from 10.30am.

The stop works are part of the fifth week of rolling stoppages and workplace bans imposed in support of enterprise bargaining negotiations.

QCU Assistant General Secretary Chris Barrett said health workers in hospitals across Queensland are continuing to take part in rolling stoppages and workplace bans, with over 250 industrial notices already lodged.

"Health workers are campaigning for better conditions and better hospitals. This includes decent salaries, manageable workloads, improved training opportunities, job security, consultative processes and better management," he said.

"So far the Queensland government has done nothing to show that they are willing to negotiate in a meaningful way with the combined health unions and if the nurses dispute is anything to go by then an agreement will not be reached any time soon," Mr Barrett said.

"Health workers are planning a state wide day of action including stop works and rallies around the state unless the Government substantially improves its enterprise bargaining offer," he said.

Public sector bargaining review

"The QCU and public sector unions yesterday rejected the Beattie government's public sector bargaining review determining not to cooperate with the review," Mr Barrett said.

"QCU and public sector unions believe the establishment of the review is made by a panicked government making policy on the run; a government not getting its own way," he said.

"QCU calls on the government to end its diversionary tactics, save the $25,000 it intends to spend on the review and return to the bargaining table with public sector unions and bargain in good faith," he said.
