Sham Telstra Inquiry goes West
Date: 17 May 2000
The Howard Government's discredited Telecommunications Service Inquiry has announced that it will visit Western Australia next month.
CPSU, the Communications Union which represents Telstra staff, has strongly criticised the exercise.
CPSU Communications Assistant Secretary Stephen Jones, said "The whole thing is a white wash designed to drum up support for Telstra privatisation. If the Government was serious about this inquiry it would be using its powers under the Telstra Act to stop Telstra reducing services and slashing 10,000 jobs."
While CPSU shares many of the community's reservations about the true intent of the Inquiry, the union intends to make a detailed submission which will show that constant cut backs and poor management decisions are preventing Telstra staff from delivering the best possible service.
The union is determined to fight the 10,000 job cuts and has called on Telstra to reverse its negative cost cutting measures and re-establish links with the community and Telstra employees.
Mr Jones added "The time is right for the Government to abandon its plans for privatising Telstra. The time is right for Ziggy Switkowski to put people first."
