Gment tax claims nonsense says QCUDate: 13 August 2002
The Queensland government's claim that the tax debate generated by unions is all about wage increases for public sector employees is wrong. Queensland Council of Unions Assistant General Secretary Chris Barrett said the government has come out saying that wage claims on behalf of union members will inevitably lead to increases in tax to fund the increases. "This is a simplistic equation that masks some major issues," Mr Barrett said. "The debate about tax in Queensland is about more than just the government paying fair wages to its employees, it's all about how the government funds public services in Queensland into the future," he said. "Public sector union campaigns have highlighted:
"These are just some of the major issues in the current bargaining campaigns and they are a symptom of grossly under-funded public services in this state," he said. "The union movement is calling on the government to have a public debate about taxation and the funding of good quality public services for the community into the future," Mr Barrett said. "The union movement is sick and tired of the government ducking this debate and casting around for other flawed policies such as Public Private Partnerships to fund public services to fix its problems," he said. "What is required is a properly structured community consultation about tax and revenue for public services and the union movement looks forward to playing its part," Mr Barrett said.
