ICFTU Supports Somavia's MandateDate: 21 August 2002
The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) today announced its support for a second five-year term of office for ILO Director General Juan Somavia. "Mr Somavia has begun an important job at the ILO with the organisation's 'Decent Work' agenda, and we naturally wish to see him carry this forward in a second mandate. He has our full support" said ICFTU General Secretary Guy Ryder. In November, the ILO Governing Body will fix the timing of its decision. The 13 of the 14 titular members of the Workers' Group on the tripartite Governing Body are from organisations affiliated to the ICFTU. The ICFTU represents 157 million workers in 225 affiliated organisations in 148 countries and territories. ICFTU is also a member of Global Unions: http://www.global-unions.org
