Brogden's Selective Plan A Step BackDate: 27 August 2002
"John Brogden's selective plan is a retrograde step for public education," according to Ms Maree O'Halloran, President of the New South Wales Teachers Federation. "A policy to increase the number of selective schools is not equitable and will damage all the surrounding schools. This proposal does not have the support of educators," he says. "The Teachers Federation supports well-resourced comprehensive high schools able to cater for the full range of students". "The Vinson Inquiry's second report released on Wednesday 24 July, 2002 put comprehensive 7-12 high schools at the heart of public education. The Inquiry found that the number of selective placements should be wound back over the next decade in favour of academic extension programs at all high schools". "John Brogden's plan merely revisits Coalition policy from the Metherell era when specialisation was the norm and the vast majority of students were forgotten", said Ms O'Halloran.
