Unions Demands that BHP Come CleanDate: 29 August 2002
The South Coast Labour Council affiliates meeting last night resolved to call a combined unions district delegates meeting for 5.30pm September 12, 2002 to discuss BHP's attacks on their workers and their unions. The meeting was informed that BHP in the NSW IRC refused to rule out legal action against individuals despite making statements to the media earlier that they would not do so. The Secretary of the South Coast Labour Council, Arthur Rorris said, "The blue is over. If they want to start another one just because they claim they have a right to have their day in court they should consider the consequences not just for their own industry but others that may be affected as well." "We don't have time for games, if BHP wants to target individuals they should at least come clean with their intentions." "They need to understand however, that with their rights comes responsibility" "The last thing we need right now is for BHP to return our region to the 1970s model of baseball-bat industrial relations. "Our steel industry doesn't need it and neither do hundreds of other businesses that may be affected." "We were hoping for a new management style that would take this industry and our region forward" "BHP needs to get a grip on industrial relations and put the interests of the industry and our region ahead of its ideological and personal war against some of its workers and their union leaders.
