New Leadership Team For NSWNADate: 02 September 2002
The 48,000-strong New South Wales Nurses Association (NSWNA) has a new leadership team following the retirement on Friday (30 August) of Sandra Moait as the Association's General Secretary. After seven years in the job Ms Moait announced her retirement at the NSWNA's Annual Conference in July this year. As of 31 August 2002, the new General Secretary is Brett Holmes and the new Assistant Secretary is Judith Kiejda. Mr Holmes was previously the Association's Assistant Secretary and Ms Kiejda was its Manager of Campaigns and Communications. Short summaries of their careers are attached. The NSWNA, in conjunction with the Australian Nursing Federation, is the largest health union in Australia and one of the largest unions in NSW. It has members working in every hospital, health facility and nursing home in NSW. End All media outlets should change their contact details for the NSWNA in accordance with this advisory. ________________________________________ Brett Holmes Brett was raised in the western NSW town of Wellington. After completing his Higher School Certificate at Wellington High he headed to Sydney to train as a nurse at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. After completing his general training at RPA, he did his certificate in psychiatric nursing at Rozelle and then his midwifery certificate at St George Hospital. At all three hospitals he served on the executive of the NSW Nurses Association's workplace branch. In 1990 he joined the staff of the NSW Nurses Association as an organiser and his areas of responsibility included the New England, Macquarie and far western regions of the State. In 1994 he was promoted to Organiser Team Manager and in 1999 was elected as the Association's Assistant Secretary. In 2001 he completed the Trade Union Training Program at Harvard University in the United States. ________________________________________ Judith Kiedja Judith grew up in Canowindra in NSW and attended school at Bathurst and Cowra. Between 1971 and 1974 she completed her general nursing certificate at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney and in 1990 upgraded this to a Bachelor of Nursing through the Wollongong University. She also holds a midwifery certificate and a Graduate Certificate of Health Science (Education). Judith spent most of her nursing career in the private sector, but before joining the NSW Nurses Association staff in 1994 she worked as a nurse unit manager at St George Hospital. Her first seven years at the Association where spent as an organiser. Over that time her areas of responsibility included the metropolitan private sector, Illawarra Area Health Service and the southern regions of the State. She was instrumental in establishing the Association's Illawarra office. In 2001 she took over the new position of campaigns organiser and eventually became campaigns and communications manager. In August this year the Association's Council elected her as Assistant Secretary, to fill the vacancy created by Brett Holmes' election as General Secretary.
