The Teachers Ad CityRail RejectedDate: 09 September 2002
City Rail rejected the contents of the Federation's new class sizes advertisement as too political for display. The rejected advertisement will run in local newspapers during Education Week. Ms Maree O'Halloran, President of the NSW Teachers Federation said today: "City Rail rejected the contents of the attached class sizes advertisement as too political for display". "Given that City Rail exposes the travelling public to a range of commercials, teachers are shocked to find we cannot pay to use public space to advertise about the importance of class sizes. We will be watching with interest future advertising in our train stations". "The rejected advertisement will run in local newspapers during Education Week. The advertisement forms one part of a promotion campaign paid for by teachers in the interests of their students". "The full advertising campaign includes radio commercials, highway billboards and newspaper advertisements". "Teachers, parents and principal groups are united in their call for the State Government to reduce class sizes for our youngest children (5 to 8 year-olds) to a maximum of 20". "A large body of research proves that students (especially from kindergarten to year 3) benefit greatly from learning in smaller classes". "The best possible education for our children is with good teachers in small classes. Our students, our parents and our teachers need the Government to act now", said Ms O'Halloran.
