Unions Urge Attendance: Meeting

Date: 12 September 2002

One year after the collapse of Ansett airlines, unions are urging former employees to attend the third creditors meeting of the company later this month.

ACTU Secretary Greg Combet said that Ansett unions hoped the meeting would approve a program of further payments of accrued entitlements owed to former employees.

Ansett's 16,000 former employees have been paid only half their total entitlements, leaving approximately $370 million in payments still outstanding.

The meeting of creditors will be held at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre on September 25 and will hear a report from company administrators on the progress of asset sales.

Mr Combet urged former employees who could not attend the Creditors Meeting to provide proxy forms to their union representatives.

"Unions are hopeful that the creditors meeting can approve further payments of employee entitlements in the coming months," Mr Combet said.

"Most former Ansett employees have not found new jobs on equivalent incomes and need extra payments as soon as possible."

Former Ansett workers will mark the anniversary of the grounding of the airline on September 14 with reunion events in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane on Saturday.

The Ansett group of companies were placed in administration on September 12, 2001.
