Fiji civil service backs strikeDate: 21 May 2000
The Fiji public sector union has announced its support for the general strike on Monday, called by the Fiji TUC. The civil servants will stage a protest on Monday morning against the illegal take over of the democratically elected coalition government., Fiji Public Service Association president Rajeshwar Singh was reported as telling fijilive.com early on Sunday morning. Members have been asked to stay at home. The association will be releasing a statement later today for union members, Singh said. The civil servants are the members of FPSA, one of the largest members of the Fiji Trade Union Congress (FTUC). Singh said: "We will ask our members to remain at home in protest so that a resolution be found before we return to work. "We are doing this to protest against what is happening in the country by thugs." He said the FPSA supports the President "for his steadfastness in resolving the present crisis." Some essential services such as water supply and the medical services will continue to be provided.
