Health and safety a 'real' issueDate: 18 September 2002
Building union representatives gathered at Victorian Trades Hall Council to remember 70 workers who have lost their lives at work since 1994. Building union representatives paused to remember the 70 workers who have been killed on Victorian construction sites since 1994 on the eve of the union organised health and safety conference in Melbourne tomorrow (19 September). Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy state secretary Martin Kingham told the gathering of union officials and health and safety representatives that the conference was being held in defiance of the Cole Royal Commission. "The Royal Commission has devoted 150 days to interrogation into union activity and only two days on an 'invitation only' health and safety conference. We are boycotting that and holding a real conference with real people. Our conference will be attended by union representatives and will not be just a token affair," Mr Kingham said.
