General strike another burdenDate: 21 May 2000
This first group of strikers belong to the Fiji Clerks and Supervisers Association. The Rarawai Mill workers walked out today and have effectively closed the mill. The President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara - quoted on fijilive.com - was succinct when asked on national television about the impending nation-wide strike: "Why strike?" Apparently he has enough to handle with a State of Emergency and a siege at the Parliamentary Complex. The FTUC general secretary, Felix Anthony has called for a general strike.
