General strike another burden

Date: 21 May 2000

The President of Fiji, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara has said a nationwide strike call by the Fiji Trades Union Congress to protest the takeover of the Mahendra Chaudhry government is an additional burden on the present state of affairs in the country.

The nationwide strike has started with workers at the Rarawai Sugar Mill walking out.

This first group of strikers belong to the Fiji Clerks and Supervisers Association.

The Rarawai Mill workers walked out today and have effectively closed the mill.

The President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara - quoted on fijilive.com - was succinct when asked on national television about the impending nation-wide strike: "Why strike?"

Apparently he has enough to handle with a State of Emergency and a siege at the Parliamentary Complex.

The FTUC general secretary, Felix Anthony has called for a general strike.
