Fiji strike details: Sydney rally

Date: 22 May 2000

Support for the TUC strike against the terrorists who have hijacked the Fiji Parliament has been exceptional.

The Secretary of the Fiji TUC, Felix Anthony, said union leaders were very happy with the response to their call for people to stay away from work.

The support is coming from both unionists and non-unionists.

The Fijian TUC Executive is meeting at this moment to discuss on-going strategy and how to respond to the fast changing political situation.

The ACTU has met to discuss the Fiji crisis and how best to respond. They will release a statement later today.

In Sydney Fiji democrat activists and union members are organising a rally for this Wednesday at 10 am at 70 Phillip St, Sydney ...outside the offices of PM Howard.

NSW Labor Council Secretary, Michael Costa, has been on radio this morning promoting this rally.

More information from Bob Singh, National Union of Workers organiser: (w) 9682 4622 or (h)086 3479.

Back in Fiji.

Most businesses and schools around Fiji are closed because of the FTUC call as the country goes through its fourth day of the armed take over of the government.

Many people are uncertain of what is going to happen next and back the TUC stay-at-home call at least in part as a fear for their safety.

The Fiji Trades Union Congress has also asked its members to stage the stay-at-home protest against the illegal take over of the government.

In the capital city, where normally it should have been a hive of activity - streets packed with cars and people going to work - today is quiet.

Buses, the main means of travel in Suva, are not doing their routes today.

People are trickling into the city where shops damaged by looters are still boarded up.

Shop owners are trying to assess the damage before they start putting things in order again.
