Paint Union says No to Bad LawsDate: 22 May 2000
LHMU members in the paint industry will tomorrow hear reports on the harsh new laws Peter Reith plans as part of a massive swing of the pendulum in favour of employers. A mass meeting of Sydney members will be part of the start of a national ACTU led union campaign. " Rushed Senate hearings on these bad laws are designed by the Government to guillotine public debate. Peter Reith is trying the pea and thimble trick," LHMU Assistant National Secretary Tim Ferrari said today. The Senate Inquiry requested submissions on the new laws last Friday and wants all submissions in by this Thursday. " This union will join other unions, and community groups, to ensure there is widespread debate about these biased laws which are in breach of all international standards.". " These meetings will kick off a national community campaign against laws which will only make it harder for working Australians to maintain their standard of living in the face of rising interest rates and prices. " These laws should be rejected outright." Mr Ferrari will address the meeting - one of several called by the union for the paint industry - tomorrow. Time: 1pm
