ICFTU Condemns Bali Terrorist AttackDate: 15 October 2002
The ICFTU today expressed its outrage and condemnation over Saturday's car bomb attack in Bali, which has killed some 200 people, with many more injured or missing. "Scores of innocent people from Indonesia, Australia and a number of other countries are victims of this cowardly and barbaric act, aimed at ordinary people at work and at leisure", said ICFTU General Secretary Guy Ryder. "On behalf of the trade union movement worldwide, we send our heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families" he added. The ICFTU is also concerned at the impact of the attack on the Balinese economy, which is heavily dependent on tourism, and the economic effects on Indonesia and the region more broadly. "This attack underlines the continued international threat posed by terrorist groups seeking to impose their will through murder and destruction. The international community, in its campaign against terror, must maintain its vigilance and respond to the challenge in a comprehensive, measured and multilateral fashion. Stopping this type of attack, and defending the democratic principles and civil liberties enshrined in international law, can only be achieved through co-operation between nations to find and prosecute those responsible. Governments must together deal with the factors which enable terrorist groups to exist and carry out despicable acts like this", Ryder concluded. The ICFTU represents 157 million workers in 225 affiliated organisations in 148 countries and territories. ICFTU is also a member of Global Unions: http://www.global-unions.org For more information, please contact the ICFTU Press Department on +32 2 224 0232 or +32 476 62 10 18.
