Paint workers back common claimsDate: 23 May 2000
Paint union members meeting around Australia today have endorsed common claims for Australian paint companies and the paint industry. There are about 16 paint companies scattered around Australia employing more than 1500 workers who are members of the LHMU. In meetings in most states today members heard reports on the Paint 2000 claim and discussed the implications of Peter Reith's pattern bargaining laws, which are now before a Senate Inquiry. The first reports back from the membership meetings are from Sydney and Brisbane. " Members were shocked at how Peter Reith's laws seek to restrict workers seeking legitimate claims at an industry level without equally restricting employers who are just as eager to seek industry-wide agreement," Tim Ferrari, Assistant National Secretary of the LHMU said today. " The Paint 2000 claim will continue industry traditions of common claims," Mr Ferrari said. In Sydney more than 400 people were addressed by Tim Ferrari, the Assistant National Secretary of the LHMU. In Brisbane around 200 people attended the LHMU meeting and were addressed by Cheryl Hyde, Assistant National Secretary. For further information: Tim Ferrari 041 766 7242
