Fraud At Lake Cargelligo Death SiteDate: 01 November 2002
The CFMEU has now exposed that BGA Pty Ltd, contracted to work on the Lake Cargelligo water tower site, had been operating on NSW building sites with no workers compensation coverage. The policy of the company was only taken out in June this year. The company fraudulently declared to the insurance company that its annual wage bill was only $7,000 per year i.e. that its workforce was only receiving $134 per week in wages. The company further declared that it was involved in pipe manufacturing when in fact it was involved in building work. The company by rorting the system only paid $650 for its workers comp policy. This fraud is typical of what is occurring on NSW building sites. Good companies that comply with the law are being undercut. In respect of the Lake Cargelligo tragedy it will now be NSW taxpayers that pay all the compensation to the families of the deceased and to the injured workers. No wonder there is a Workcover deficit! The State Government needs to stop the fraud taking place on its own building sites as well as in all NSW workplaces.
