Angry Truckies to Converge on AlburyDate: 25 May 2000
Pressure is building on trucking employers over hours and rates with hundreds of drivers heading to Albury to join a peaceful assembly on the Hume Highway. More than 200 trucks, covering three kilometers of highway, are already in place at the border town and many more are expected to arrive today. The action is being coordinated by a committee of both union and non-union long distance drivers with the support of the Transport Workers Union. "The drivers are parking their trucks on the highway and calling on the rest of the industry to pull up and support them," TWU state secretary Tony Sheldon says. "The clear message from drivers is that the time for action for better rates and shorter hours has well and truly arrived."
