ASU wins Qld Work and Family Award

Date: 28 November 2002

The Australian Services Union (Qld Clerical and Admin) was today awarded one of the inaugural Queensland Work and Family Awards for their contribution to helping workers balance their work and family responsibilities.

ASU Branch Secretary Julie Bignell said the Award was an important recognition of the ASU's long-standing commitment to fostering family-friendly workplaces for union members.

"This award recognises that our union is leading the way in the campaign to make Queensland workplaces family-friendly," Ms Bignell said.

"The issue of ensuring family friendly workplaces is fundamentally important at a time when parents are working longer hours," she said.

"Like all unions, the ASU has never believed that people should have to choose between being good workers and good parents," she said.

"It should not be forgotten that trade unions have always been at the forefront of developing family-friendly workplaces."

"Just this week we have seen the union movement announce details of a Work and Family Test Case that aims to win new rights to part-time work, family leave and extra unpaid maternity leave for millions of employees," she said.

The ASU was announced co-winner (with the Queensland Working Women's Service) of the Supportive Initiative Award at the Queensland Government 2002 Work and Family Awards in a ceremony today.

The Supportive Initiative Award was awarded to an organisation that had assisted in the development of work and family friendly practices in other workplaces as well as their own workplace.
